Austin Basis, star of the CW's award-winning drama/sci-fi series, "Beauty & The Beast," was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes shortly before his ninth birthday. As an actor with diabetes, he has always had to work harder to maintain his heath - especially with long work hours and a chaotic schedule. Typically testing his blood sugar 4-5 times daily, Austin found himself testing his blood sugar 7-8 times while working; he also wears an insulin pump, which allows for more accurate management and freedom from the burden of daily injections. Living and working with diabetes from such a young age has inspired Austin to overcome any obstacle and he uses this as motivation to succeed at everything to which he puts his mind.
Austin has become a leader in the diabetes community, and a strong advocate for diabetes research and awareness. He is involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), in which he always encourages children to never let diabetes get in the way of their dreams. He is also proud to be a member of the Stop Diabetes® Celebrity Cabinet for the American Diabetes Association. Austin wants to Stop Diabetes to show everyone living with diabetes that you can still overcome any obstacle.
