Houston Texan Duane Brown knows first-hand how serious diabetes is and how raising awareness is key to helping Stop Diabetes®.
When Duane was 6 years old, his mom was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and put on insulin. She was then put on dialysis when her kidneys failed eight years ago. But it wasn't until 2011, when she had multiple strokes, that it really hit him how serious diabetes can be if you don't take care of yourself.
Duane's mother survived and is now fighting to regain her health, with her son's encouragement and support. He bought her a membership at a local gym and put her on a special diet, along with his grandmother, who was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes several years ago.
Duane advocates for the prevention of type 2 diabetes because he doesn't want to see others go through what his mom went through, or deal with diabetes in their later years as his grandmother is doing.
Duane is proud to be part of the American Diabetes Association's movement to Stop Diabetes by educating the public about preventing and managing type 2 diabetes.
