  • Success Alert: Coverage for Insulin Pumps in Arizona Medicaid

    Due to the efforts of Diabetes Advocates across the state, the Senate passed a budget that includes insulin pumps as a covered benefit in the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System. Now, those AHCCCS recipients whose doctors prescribe an insulin pump will have access to this vital tool to manage their diabetes and avoid costlier treatments down the road. This is a big victory for Diabetes Advocates and people with diabetes in Arizona!

    Governor Robert Bentley signed Senate Bill 57, allowing school employees to volunteer to be trained to help children with diabetes with essential care tasks, including administering insulin and glucagon. Because of the actions of Diabetes Advocates, this will make a huge difference in children’s lives

    Tennessee law now allows school employees to volunteer to be trained to help children with diabetes with essential care tasks, including administering insulin, because of Diabetes Advocates! Now, Tennessee children with diabetes can be safe at school.

  • Success Alert: Special Diabetes Program Extended for One Year

    On March 31st, Congress extended the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) for a year. The federal funding for this essential program was set to expire on September 30, 2014, but the inclusion of SDP as part of the fix to the Sustainable Growth Rate has ensured the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) and the Special Diabetes Programs for Type 1 Diabetes (SDP-Type1) will continue through September 2015 with an additional $300 million in funding.

  • Success Alert: California Safe at School Victory

    In a monumental victory for our kids, the California Supreme Court ruled on August 19, 2013 that California law permits trained school personnel to administer insulin to children with diabetes. That means children with diabetes will be able to get the care they need to be healthy and safe at school. This decision is the culmination of nearly eight years of hard work and persistence by the American Diabetes Association, and we are extremely pleased with the result.

  • Success Alert: Arizona Safe at School Victory

    In April 2013, Governor Jan Brewer signed Arizona’s Safe at School legislation (H.B. 2042). H.B. 2042 allows school staff members to volunteer to be trained to give insulin; amends existing law to add nurses to the list of health providers who can train school personnel to administer glucagon; and allows children who are mature enough to self-manage their diabetes to do so at school and school-sponsored activities.
